Project Description:

The Sanitary Sewer Lining Project was initiated to effectively extend the lifecycle of existing wastewater infrastructure and reduce inflow and infiltration of storm water into the sanitary sewer network.

Condition assessments have been completed on sanitary sewer pipes throughout the City using closed circuit television video (CCTV) to prioritize their selection in the lining program.

The sewer lining project has a number of benefits as follows:

  • Less expensive than traditional repair, as it avoids the costs of excavation, removal, and restoration of the damaged pipes and the surrounding areas.
  • Faster than traditional repair, as it can be completed in a matter of hours or days, depending on the length and condition of the pipes.
  • Less intrusive than traditional repair, as it does not disturb the landscaping, driveways, sidewalks, or other structures that may be above or near the pipes.
  • Environmentally friendly than traditional repair, as it reduces the waste of materials and the risk of contamination from leaking pipes.
  • Permanent and stable than traditional repair, as it creates a new pipe within the old one that is resistant to leaks, cracks, corrosion, and root intrusion. The new pipe also improves the flow and capacity of the sewer system.

Please see documents for locations identified to be completed.

Background:

Sanitary sewers are underground pipes that carry wastewater from homes and businesses to a wastewater treatment plant. Sewer relining is a trenchless process of repairing and renewing existing sanitary sewer pipes without excavating the roadway.

The Sanitary Sewer Relining Project involves cleaning the existing sewer pipe and placing a new resin (plastic) lining within it. This lining creates a new pipe inside the old one, extending its service life and reducing maintenance costs. The lining also prevents leaks, cracks, and root intrusion that can cause wastewater backups or overflows.

The methodology is an effective process carried out by numerous municipalities to improve their wastewater infrastructure and protect the environment.

Approved Budget:
Total Approved Budget: $500,000

Estimated Completion:
April 2024
