The City of Port Colborne is starting the process of creating a new Official Plan! As the first step in this exciting project, we are engaging with our community to hear your priorities on how the city should grow.

The City’s current Official plan was approved in 2013 and is out of date. We need a new Official Plan that reflects Port Colborne today, while creating a new vision for the future.

The new Official Plan will focus on how our city should grow between now and the year 2051 and beyond to support our communities, our environment, and our economy. This includes key priorities around planning for new housing, housing affordability, economic prosperity and jobs, addressing climate change, supporting our environment, and creating a healthy community.

The new Official Plan will also implement recent Regional and Provincial policy directions, as well as key policy areas identified in the Strategic Plan and other background studies that will help determine where growth can and should go, and what services and infrastructure is needed to support growth.

What is an Official Plan?

An Official Plan is document that contains goals and policies to guide growth, economic development, and the protection of our built and natural environment.

The Official Plan will look at:

  • Creating a vision for how to create a vibrant and growing city to 2051 and beyond
  • Where new housing, jobs, shops, and industry will be located
  • Planning for services the community needs, like roads, sewers, schools, and parks
  • How to protect and enhance natural areas and green spaces
  • Planning for jobs and economic vitality
  • How to plan for climate change impacts and environmental sustainability
  • Establishing community improvement initiatives
  • Ways to implement the Strategic Plan 2023-2026
  • Conforming municipal policies with provincial and regional policies
