Scope of the Project
The scope of the project project for Phase 1 of Lions Field Park will provide;
Tree planting along Elm street and Killaly Street West
New fence along the park edge
New Park Gateway enhancements
Mural facing Killaly Street West
Background
Lions Field, situated at the heart of the City of Port Colborne, is a vibrant community hub frequented by residents and various user groups. Notably, it serves as the annual venue for the Lions Club Carnival. Recognizing the significance of this public space, the municipality has undertaken the Lions Field construction project to enhance its appeal and functionality.
By investing in these spaces together, we build strong and healthy neighborhoods that attract residents, promote tourism, grow the local and regional economy, and beautify Niagara’s communities.
The budget for the Lions Field Streetscape Project was previously approved by Council, and the City has secured financial support through the Niagara Region's Public Realm Investment Program (PRIP).
Construction is now completed at the park. We are now entering the public consultation phase of the park update. A new mural will be painted on an existing building facing Killaly Street West and residents are asked to give input on four possible design choices. Each proposed mural incorporates several design elements, including a lion to represent the Lions Club, baseball players, the Port Colborne landscape and notable aspects of the Lions Carnival. The overarching goal is to convey a positive atmosphere that reflects community spirit. Residents are asked to choose the design they feel captures the following qualities:
Provides Aesthetic Enhancement: The mural that transforms plain walls into eye-catching focal points that can uplift the overall ambiance of the field.
Cultural Expression: The mural that celebrates local culture, history, or traditions, fostering a sense of community and pride.
Storytelling: The mural that tells a story or conveys message, making it a powerful communication and reflection.
Inspiration and Motivation: The mural that features a motivational theme, serving as reminders to inspire and uplift those who see it.
Brand Identity: The mural that reinforces brand identity and creates a unique environment.
Historical Commemoration: The mural that honors the significant events, figures, or movements, preserving history of the Lion’s legacy in a visually impactful way.
Voting will be open from Nov. 7 until Nov. 28 with the winning design being announced on Dec. 3.
