Downspouts need to be directed far enough away from the wall of your house that the water runs across your lawn where it can slowly seep away. If it is too close to the wall, it will go into your foundation drain, which goes into your sump pump. If your sump pump is connected to the sanitary sewer, your rainwater is going into the sanitary sewer.
